There are 50,000 cabs in Shanghai

and when it's raining, they're all taken.

It has rained here for the last three days. In a torrential downpour yesterday, Rowat and I tried to grab a cab by working different corners of an intersection. I notice one unloading its passengers, turn and holler at Rowat to come over, and proceed to saunter over to the cab, which is about 15 feet away.

All of a sudden, with a tone in his voice conveying Immediate Danger, Rowat screams "HEADS UP! HEADS UP!!" A black flash passes me on my right--it's a woman at full sprint running towards our cab! The woman and I reach the cab at the same time.

It's quite amazing how you don't need to be speaking the same language to convey certain indelicate ideas--love certainly is not the only universal language.

Shortly thereafter, Rowat and I are speeding through the Shanghai night, on our way to dinner.
