Just saw Jay-Z on 60 Minues II

. It was interesting to see--this dude has built a $300-million-plus business encompassing clothing, music, movies, and vodka (!) from nothing. He promotes all his products at his concerts, which people pay to see. He's done a brilliant job of building his brand: his days selling crack, getting shot at, and his conviction for stabbing a producer have contributed to his "street cred"; his MC skills have contributed to his popularity with fans of non-commercial hiphop; and his business acumen has ensured the success of his company.

It was interesting to see that his anti-establishment persona was embraced by the braintrust of the Strawberries music chains--40, 50, and 60 year old white guys in suits bobbing their bald heads along to Jay-Z's newest album... but the thing that they have in common is that they all like to make money.

Guess that the love of making money transcends certain boundaries here in the US.
