Some capsule reviews for dat azz

Seen some flicks recently.

Finding Nemo - Fantastic. Pixar killed this one; the water animation is great, the story line is engaging, and in the tradional Pixar model, the dialogue has double-entendres that both kids and parents will laugh at, usually on totally different levels.

Charlie's Angels - Terrible. This is one of the worst movies I have seen in a long, long time. I don't know how director McG managed to screw this up, with three foxy leading ladies, Bernie Mac as a respectable replacement for Bill Murray, Crispin Glover as a potentially cool bad guy, and millions of dollars to spend on production and marketing. But he did. This movie has such a confusing script and is so riddled with plot holes that my friends Chloe and Mike said they stopped watching with about 30 minutes remaining and tried to enjoy the hotness of Liu, Diaz, and Barrymore. Despite what you may think, this move is NOT worth seeing, even for the aforementioned three.

Pirates of the Caribbean - (Disclaimer: it's a Disney film) Surprisingly, very good. Johnny Depp was great, and Orlando Bloom, and relative newcomer Keira Knightley ("a cross between Winona Ryder and Natalie Portman," said Jon and Geneve, independently of one another) both gave fine performances. The script was entertaining, and the special effects were really super cool. And I'm a sucker for a good pirate movie, having put myself in that role back in the day when I sailed 'round the virtual Caribbean in search of virtual plunder in Sid Meier's Pirates! on my Commodore 64.

I don't think I got much cooler--or popular with the ladies--than when I was a virtual pirate.

On another, non-pirate related note, I have come to really take RottenTomatoes.com as gospel when deciding whether to see a movie. It aggregates reviews from around the web, and assigns a "Fresh" or "Rotten" rating based on the prevailing opinions.

On RottenTomatoes, the three movies above received the following ratings:
Finding Nemo: A stunning 156 of 158 reviews (99%) were positive, resulting in a very "Fresh" rating. Very few movies receive a rating this high.
Charlie's Angels: 60 of 149 reviews (40%) were positive--a decidedly "Rotten" rating.
Pirates of the Caribbean: 110 of 141 (78%) were positive. This is a solid "Fresh" movie.
