Shilling for Schilling

Curt Schilling, the newly-signed Boston Red Sox pitcher, rips broadcast media a new one when they criticize him for talking directly to Red Sox fans via the Internet.

Schilling is currently an anomaly among pro athletes, with the rest being too complacent or unaware of how to bypass traditional media to talk to the fans directly. However, he makes some salient points about why he talks directly to fans (there is no biased "filter"--just Schilling, saying what he wants to say) and I have to wonder how long it will be before other athletes get fed up with the spin put on their words and follow Schilling's example.

This example really illustrates the structures that are developing (chat rooms, blogs, etc.) to bypass "the gatekeepers" of traditional media. I don't yet think the technology has hit the disruptive stage yet (think Napster for an example of disruptive technology), but it will be interesting to see if and how traditional media deals with the change.

Also, here is a somwhat related piece on Red Sox Nation called The Curt Schilling Manifesto.
