Akshay At the Bat
My buddy Jason has Akshay Buddiga in the office National Spelling Bee pool. Akshay was at the mic with a tough word to spell--he had a really sour look on his face from first hearing it, and he had exhausted his 'regulation time' to spell the word.
So Akshay is standing at the mic, when all of a sudden, he collapses as if he's fainted (the office collectively gasps), gets up, brushes himself off, steps to the mic, and nails the word, as the office explodes in cheers.
Best. TV. Ever.
Update: I was calling Akshay 'Boy of Destiny' since his fainting spell, but alas, he finished in second place, missing his chance to become the first sibling of a Bee Winner to also win (Akshay's brother Pratyush won in 2002).
Update 2: There's a Yahoo story on the incident... and the word Akshay nailed was 'alopecoid'.
