Disussing Amongst Yourselves

The riot in Detroit the other night really underscored something for me: we at ESPN have to get better at directing the flow of discussion when major sports stories break.

We do a tremendous job of breaking news, but with the rise of blogging, people come to our site to find out the latest news, and then go to blogs to carry on the discussion (doing a Technorati search on "Artest" brings up 950 blog posts since Friday!) Our SportsNation site does a great job of collecting reader feedback, and there are interesting reactions to the Artest incident up there right now. What we lose with SN, though, is the valuable real-time discussion between readers that are common on blogs.

I'm hoping that we can add some interesting features soon to capitalize on our unique position to help direct the flow of the quality blogosphere discussion about the always fascinating sports world.
