2005 Plan

I hope you closed out 2004 safely and with loved ones, like I did... had take-out Indian food and watched one excellent movie (Garden State), and one not-bad one (Shaun of the Dead).

I don't like making New Year's resolutions--January 1st is too arbitrary a date, and if things were really important, I wouldn't need to resolve to do them. That being said, I'm looking forward to doing some things differently in 2005.

Read. I read tons of stuff online, but my meatspace bookshelf keeps growing and growing and I'm barely making a dent. I read 13 books last year, and want to double that this year.

Build. I've got ideas for extensions to Firefox, Movable Type, and some other extensible products, but haven't found the time to mess around and see what I can build out. Gotta find the time to do so.

Compartmentalize Consumption. Life seemed busier than ever in 2004, and it's because of the proliferation of quality digital content. I like being in the know, and at times I felt overwhelmed and stressed out by the need to consume content. Newsgator has been a lifesaver in that regard, but when I get a spare moment, I'm often back online, consuming. I need to control this unbridled consumption and set aside time to read.

Seek Perspective. I've been lucky to visit places with fundamentally different economic and social systems this year, which has provided perspective regarding life and career priorities. I want to continue to seek out different perspectives that challenge the assumptions I make and things that I take for granted.

Write. I want to write a lot more here than I currently do.

Go Offline. There's so much in the real world that I miss by being plugged in (the opposite it true too, I suppose). The web will be waiting when I get back--get the hell out and enjoy living.

Just thinking about these things shows me that my content consumption habit is sucking up time that I want to spend doing other things. Gotta tame the beast before you let it out of its cage, right, Derek?

Well, enough blathering. Happy New Year, and I hope 2005 leaves you better off than 2004 did.
