Web 2.0: Bite-sized Nuggets
Didn't get notes for all of these sessions, but here are some good tidbits:
Developing MMPORGS
- $20-100M to build a game to compete with the big boys
- Subcibers will stay from 6 months to 8 years
- There's no finance model for MMPORGs like in film right now, projects funded internally, which is a big hurdle
Open Systems
Tim O'Reilly: Openness is good, but it's clear that capturing value involves owning something. What is it?Jeff Barr, AWS Evangelist: We own product catalog, the process of letting our 50M customers find things, buy things, fulfill and do customer service.
Toni Schneider, Yahoo Developer Network: More difficult for Yahoo since we have so many different services. Yahoo owns the user's trust to put their data into Yahoo, and letting them access it in the right place.
O'Reilly: You also own the network effect and the metadata.
Barr: You can build a place where people add value, and taking away the system means that customers will lose value.
