Web 2.0 Summary: Jeremy Allaire and Brightcove
Jeremy Alliare, author of Cold Fusion, gave a talk on his new venture, Brightcove. It looks to be a well thought-out product that has the potential to disrupt TV and movie industries by allowing producers to easily distribute straight to consumers. And, it even has business-model support built in! Here are the notes:
TV and video industry is enormous. $350B world wide, but itdoesn't have anything to do with the internet.
Brightcove's mission is to empower producers to directly distribute content to consumers over the internet.
Three distribution services:
- publishing services
- affiliate
- consumer
Monetization web services on top of dist. services:
- ads
- pay media
- syndication
Jeremy walks through a Brightcove Demo.
"We're a cable channel building a business in a direct to consumer distribution model."
Interface is built using Flash.
There are multiple steps to publish a video clip, but it's a pretty intuitive experience.
Neatest part: Brightcove offers clickable advertising laid on top of a playing video. Clicking on the overlay will pause the video, take the user to the advertiser's interactive experience. When the ad experience is done, Brightcove will return the user to the video at the same point they left.
