Good ol' fashioned double header
Went and saw two movies tonight.
Step Into Liquid presents several surfing vignettes, from a dude who has surfed every day for the last 20 years, to three California boys teaching Protestant and Catholic kids in Ireland how to surf, to several big-wave surfers attempting to catch huge (60-foot) waves in the open ocean, 100 miles off the coast of San Diego. The stories were entertaining and the cinematography was jaw-dropping. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 54/66 for a score of 82%.
Underworld is schlocky, but it's the kind of schlock that entertains you for two hours and has you leaving the movie with a smile on your face. It tells the story of a war between vampires and werewolves in a city that appears to be New York crossed with some Transylvanian village. It's stylish and dark, and while the story is told from the perspective of a female vampire (played by Kate Beckinsale), the movie is ambiguous about which faction is good and which is evil. I found this extremely refreshing in a Hollywood production, which is maybe why I liked this more than I reasonably should have... since Rotten Tomaotes gave it 36/117 for a score of 31%.
