37 Signals Launches Campfire

37 Signals has launched Campfire today. Campfire is a web-based app that functions like IM on steroids, and is much better suited for remote collaborative work than regular ol' IM.

From their FAQ about why Campfire is better than IM, the benefits of Campfire over IM are:

  • a URL for chats (versus "locationless" IM)
  • your IM network doesn't matter, as Campfire operates through a browser
  • simple filesharing, presumably through firewalls
  • archived chat transcripts
  • secure chats over SSL
  • persistent chats (when you leave a chat, it doesn't disappear

Pricing is $12 / month and up, and different pricing levels offer variations of simultaneous chatters, file space, and SSL access.

Looks like another simple, elegant tool to help facilitate remote collaboration, solving one of the "millions of small problems" that exist, and doing it well (and probably lucratively).
